The Chaz Interviews - July, 2003
by Chaz and the MP3.com artists |
It was the summer of 2003 and MP3.com's active message board community was heating up as well -- with flame wars.
Along came Chaz Fanaro, looking to cut through the negative noise. He began to interview many of the musical artists who pitched a tent on the popular indie music forum. Others pitched in with questions of their own. July of 2003 could have turned ugly, but thanks to the interviews blanketing the forum, it became a home for insight and mutual respect.
The forums were wiped clean by Vivendi in December, 2003. The interviews live on.

Dave, what is your musical background and are you really a studio player?
Studio Player
Chaz!! How's it going man? Are you trying to put some normalcy to the boards? Talk about music???
Musical background - I started playing guitar when I was about 8 years old and I've been playing ever since. For all those years of playing (I'm 44 now) I wish I was much better at it but it seems to be a never-ending learning curve. That's cool because it keeps my trying harder to get better. I originally took lessons and learned how to read music but I can't read a note now. I play mainly by ear. I also played drums for a few years as a teen and still love to bang out a few beats every now and then. My influences and taste in music tends to lean towards the 70's style of rock since I grew up listening to bands such as Black Sabbath, Zeppelin, Alice Copper, Hendrix etc... I'm also a big fan of the Blues and have some influences there as well. I love jammin some blues out with a group of guys. Fun stuff to play.
Studio Player - I guess there's a bit of a story to that. I live in an artist loft studio in an old warehouse. I'm also a painter and show my artwork in the local galleries. My email for years was studiopainter and I started to use that as my nickname on art sites and BB's. As I became more involved in recording music and putting it up to the net it just seemed natural to start using Studio Player. The latest twist is that I've decided to use a new name for all my music related endeavors and now go under the name David Player. When I hook up with other musicians they now me now as Player and I have noticed that there seems to be more interest in me as a guitarist ever since I've changed my name. I never thought I would use another name other than my own but I can see why so many artists have done the same. It's all part of the persona. Who's going to notice a Bob Smith (sorry to any Bob Smith's out there)or a David Patterson.
Some cool questions!! Thanks for asking.
